Amazon is set to launch a new video streaming service which may help quell the critics of Unbox.
Speaking at the D6 conference, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos mentioned plans for the new streaming service, which would help combat complaints about how long their downloads can take, and would also prevent the files from clustering up your hard drive.
Bezos went on to say that the service would be based on a pay-as-you-view structure, rather than a subscription service. Nothing was said on which studios and production companies they’ve signed deals with, or how it will be launched interntationally. As Bezos said,
“We’re very serious about the video business, but it is much more difficult because there are so many market participants.”
This echoes the slow progress of Amazon’s DRM-free low price MP3 store, having to negotiate special terms on a country-by-country basis.
Amazon Unbox has received many criticims across the board, from their content being DRM restricted so that you can’t play it on your Mac; you can only play it on the device you downloaded it to – you can’t transfer between devices; and slow download speeds.
We look forward to testing out the new service form the guys at Amazon, here’s hoping they’ve learnt from their mistakes!
