Ever wish that you could send video greetings to your friends and family through your mobile phone? Well, mogreets are on their way to fulfill that dream. Mogreet, a California based company, has raised $5 million from Draper Fisher Jurvetson Frontier and other venture capital firms such as Ascend Ventures, Black Diamond Ventures, and Spyglass Ventures. The money is going towards the development and distribution of mogreets, video messages that are sent via mobile phones, i.e. “MObile GREETings”. The video content can be delivered by MMS or via an attachment in a text message.
To quote CrunchBase “Mogreet started in 2006 in Southern California with a small team of visionaries who wanted to evolve the way people send text messages.” They are striving completely to revamp the texting world into which we have evolved. Contracting designers, artists, and tech wizards they have a team that is innovative, savvy, and who understand user-psychology. According to them,
“We at Mogreet Studios enjoy working every day with innovative artists to keep building upon a library that is unparalleled in size and scope. Our mission: To create quality, cutting-edge videos and share the love! A key factor in giving Mogreet a ‘community feel’ is that every mogreet creator earns money when their videos are shared…Pick it, personalize it, send it. It’s that simple. We believe there will come a day when you can’t imagine a world without Mogreet. Welcome to the end of texting as you know it…”
According to Techcrunch “Mogreets are…video files compressed to 100 kilobits or less, are priced between $0.49 and $0.99. Evidently, teenagers are the company’s main target group.” Mogreet has finalized distribution partnerships with AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint. Charges from mogreets are accumulated and added to the phone bill itself. Moreover, the company has managed to strike a few deals with Hollywood studios (such as Paramount) that have allowed them to “build-up a 3500-strong catalog of greetings ranging from short original clips shot with celebrities to re-purposed clips from films. Other clips include animation and user-generated content. The company also offers an ad-supported outlet with free mobile video greetings that are used as a promotional tool for upcoming film releases.”
Having secured the deals and financing that they have already Mogreet looks on-track to launch the mogreet technology next year. At the moment they are in the beta testing phases. Look for them next year.
