Demotix, Blinkx, Tiscali & Layoffs

Below are a few links to some of articles we’ve been reading this week and over the holidays - a quick snapshot of what you should know about to keep you up to date with industry activity!

  • We are keeping a close eye on Demotix, a ‘Professional UGC’ Newswire with chilling videos/images on the ground in Gaza. We covered Demotix when it launched, and Techcrunch UK has done a piece on them this week.
  • Interested in this press release about Blinkx launching the “Un-Roll Unit” - an innovative response to branded advertising that goes beyond mere pre/post rolls and basic overlays. Its innovations such as these that catalyze advertisers to get involved in the online video world. Users are switching, but some advertisers are still hesitant.  Shell Oil (MediaCom) are the first adopters of this new feature, attracting 6m+ impressions, see a demo here
  • Tiscali TV closes in Italy, as it struggled to gain a solid subscriber base since their launch just over 1 year ago. Tiscali TV Italia leaves the market open for its main competitors, Alice Home TV and Fastweb, as they continue building their platforms. Signs point to overall tough times at Tiscali UK, begging the question of what the future holds for the company.
  • Unfortunately, we are keeping a look out for recent layoffs in the mediasphere, thanks to Techcrunch
  • 2008 Year In Video, by YouTube - interesting to see what this snapshot of top 10 videos shows us about what’s popular in mainstream media today (most are amusing but braindead pop culture videos — YouTube has a ways to go before turning into a Quality Content platform). Our favorite is Battle At Kruger, who needs the National Geographic or Discovery when we have clips like this?
  • New Tee Vee does a great job outlining the major 2008 Online Video news - from aquisitions, fundraising activities, closures etc. They also compile a list of what industry folks are expecting for the year ahead. Good food for thought.
  • Comscore has announced its latest Online Video findings, with Americans watching 12.7 billion videos in November 2008 (up 34% from last year), watching 87 videos on average per person. Google and YouTube dominated the statistics, accounting for 40% of this online video usage. Fox Interactive Media came second ( 3.5% of video views), then Viacom digital (2.6 % of video views). Hulu topped the charts in terms of duration of video watched (avg. 12 minutes per video, vs. 3 min avg duration of YouTube), but in terms of percentage of video views it placed sixth with 1.8%. We expect this figure to rise exponentially over the year.
