Steve Jobs, “The iPad is a magical and revolutionary device…. at an unbelievable price!”

For over a month now the whole world has been talking about the “Apple Tablet”, the “iSlate”, the all-in-one sexy technology device that does it all. Today at Macworld 2010 our curiosity was fed with a remarkable gadget - essentially a larger, more powerful iPod.

Apple, the company that brought us all-in-one iMacs, the ultra-thin Macbook Air, the 17″ laptop, iPods, the Apple Music Store, the App store, and the iPhone has now unveiled their latest piece of sexy equipment…. The Apple iPAD.

Many were expecting something more, something different, criticisizing Apple for not living up to the hype and “only” delivering a stronger bigger iPod (no USB, no CAMERA). Others detest the name choice, with women funnily disturbed at the female product the name conjures up (someone twittered “The Apple iPad for all your heavy (work)flow days” ). Yes, Apple should have gone with “iTablet” or “iSlate”, but taking a perfect piece of technology like the iPod and building it up seems like a good revolutionary step forward. Best part of it all is that its priced at $499! Thats a relief for many expecting it to be around the $1000 mark (I think they learned from the iPhone pricing issue the first time around.)
TECH SPECS and MORE

The stories that fed the rumor mill online hypothesized on a plethora of applications and specs about the iPad, and most of them were confirmed. Lets run through this baby!

• 9.7-inch LED

• 1.5 lbs and 0.5 inches thin

• 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

• 140,000 applications

• Full iWork Functionality

• Speaker and microphone

• A compass and an accelerometer

• 10 hours battery life

• 1GHz Apple A3 chip — Apple chips (mmm…delicious!)

• Runs OS X

• eBook: Books on iTunes with iBook application

• Over 1000 sensors, LED backlight with IPS technology

• The 30-pin dock connector on the bottom of the iPad - to dock and charge. Connect to iPad accessories like the Camera Connection Kit or the Keyboard Dock - paid separately

• Full size mechanical keyboard - paid separately

• iPad Case: ” allows you to use iPad in various positions, to make it easy to type, look at photos, or watch movies”

• A sexy metal case, yes.

• A belt clip? Thank you but no thank you.

Biggest technological disappointement is that we were expecting more of a computer and this isnt quite that. Also there is no camera, and no USB slot (but you can get that in the kit).

See all the features here, or scroll down for my bulletpoint cheat sheet.

Despite the poor reputation of iPhone’s US reception, Apple is sticking with AT&T for $30 unlimited data.

PRICING

The biggest surprise of the day was the price-point! The Wifi 16GB model will be priced at $499, 32GB at $599 and $699 for the 64GB model. The price goes up with the 3G ($629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB, and $829 64GB). As usual though, make sure you budget in the accesories like the keyboard and camera kit, etc.

CONTENT IS KING. Goodbye Kindle!

Steve Jobs knows that content is key determinant for the success of the tablet. The announcement of an e-book store was expected, and the showcase of the iBook application definately gets me excited!

Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Hachette — are supporting the app. ( Where’s Random House? )

The Kindle pricing will hold, with the first book priced at $14.99 ( “True Compass” by Edward Kennedy). In true Apple fashion, with a simple tap you can purchase the book off of iTunes. Your book will be displayed on a digital bookshelf, and pages turn in a smooth curling fashion by tapping the sides of the screen.

The iPad will support the popular ePub format and authors will be able to embed multimedia such as photos, videos, and audio files directly into books. That’s a cool feature for standard books and an outstanding feature for textbooks. Imagine your history book containing video and audio snippets.

The iPad doesnt use the e-ink technology like the Kindle does, so it might not be as easy on the eyes… but the backlight functionality should suffice, and the user-experience certainly intrigues.

Though the Kindle is slightly cheaper, the functionality of the iPad is significantly better, so the price increase is warranted.

THE APPLE EVOLUTION REVOLUTION

From the iPod to the iMac, Apple has a history of changing the media landscape. It contributed significantly to the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and subsequently the Macintosh. Over time it continued to deliver exciting products, replacing Discmans and Walkmans with the iPod and coined the term “smartphones” for the iPhone setting the bar high for mobile technology.

Today, with the release of the iPad, Apple is taking on netbooks and ereaders and personal computers with this sexy gadget. You just know that by the time the second generation comes out, the technology landscape will have changed drammatically!
Im a bit disappointed for the lack of USB and CAMERA, I agree that its essentially a bigger iPod, but we’ll just have to wait for the next generation for that all-in-one device we were expecting. If you are a geeky apple follower you might just buy one because its cool and hip and a wonderful little toy.

Is it a gadget you need? Did it live up to the hype? Not really…but who cares! its Apple!

Apple just knows how to make things sexy and sleek and easy to use… so I for one will run to buy it as soon as its available. NB: 60 days for non 3G version a bit longer for 3G version
Will you get one?

—————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Internet TV and Connected TVs were big topics at last year CES. This year we are seeing content-filled products coming to fruition, and deals being made to make watching Internet TV on the big screen a comfortable reality. At CES this year the Internet set top boxes (STBs) evolved. But with the innovation comes fear. Cable companies fear of the complete disruption of their business model, and their concerns are warranted given the latest developments.

At the center of everyone’s attention is the Boxxee Box, allowing users to find and watch online content directly from the TV. Boxee TV content includes CNN, CBS, and a myriad of Internet TV channels. Its remote features a full QWERTY keyboard on one side and a navigation pane on the other, to ease surfing and browsing on the TV.

Then there’s the Sling Box 700U………..
Consumer Electronics Show 2010 Summary: Connectivity, Convergence, Cool

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard the blogosphere buzz and global news coverage about this year’s Consumer Electronic Show (CES) from January 7th to January 9th.

Ever present in Las Vegas, CES is the Super Bowl of technology, the Disney World for Geeks, and a must-attend event for media industry folk. CES is where companies showcase their latest innovations, trends are set for years to come, and major deals are made behind the scenes.

CES opened its doors in 1967 in New York. It’s astounding history boasts noteworthy announcements such as 1975’s Atari “Pong” game, the VHS VCR (1977), Camcorder (1981) and the Compact Disk (1991) among others. CES can be seen as a fossilized media marble; just a quick peak at the products announced throughout its history and we are transported back in time to a wonderfully naive unconnected world. This year, over 110,000 attendees were present on the conference floor, with 2,500 exhibitors and more than 20,000 new products on display.

This year’s CES was greatly anticipated, its products expected to make a significant impact particularly on entertainment, mobile and publishing industries, all experiencing significant evolutions under woeful economic and advertising conditions. The very future of these industries relies on the technological innovations that emerge in response to changing consumer needs and habits….continue reading on Periscope Post.

Video. More marketers will increasingly embrace online video advertising, supported by the twin boom of video streams and video ad networks.

Usage. The number of Internet users will begin to stabilize, as penetration reaches 66% of the US population, or 205.3 million people.

Social media. Marketers will demand better ways to manage and measure the impact of earned media—the additional unpaid exposure a brand gets when consumers share about the brand online.

Convergence. The Consumer Electronics Show in early 2010 will usher in TVs with direct Internet connectivity, or with on-screen access to content portals such as YouTube, Blockbuster and Netflix.

Mobile. Mobile ad spending will rise from $416 million in 2009 to $593 million in 2010 as more brands and agencies integrate mobile into their marketing mix.

Social commerce. Retailers will become more serious about trying to measure social media’s impact on sales.

UK & Europe. Throughout Europe, the recession has helped increase the sophistication of Internet marketing.

TV Everywhere. TVE is a new framework that will enable participants in the established TV industry to bring more of their content online. TV networks will be enabled to put their shows on the Web with these three caveats…

Connected TV. Just as the traditional TV industry makes moves to bring TV to the PC, the consumer electronics industry is making moves to bring online video to the TV.

Mobile Video. With the surge in smartphone sales, mobile video adoption will become more than just a blip on the radar.

Video Monetization. In 2009, online video advertising grew faster than any other category in the global advertising market (50 percent). It’s forecast to grow 3-5X over the next several years.

Video Commerce and Marketing. In 2009 we began to see the broad adoption of online video by all kinds of marketers and retailers. Why is this a big deal?

Online Video Platforms. In 2009, our industry finally emerged as a category: Online Video Platforms (OVPs), a cloud-based approach to video publishing and distribution.

Mobile. The biggest mobile phone of the show, of course, will be Google’s Nexus One,

Laptops. Laptops and Netbooks at CES 2010 will be riding the coat tails of Intel, which has already announced new processors and chipsets in “Arrandale” (for laptops) and “Pinetrail” (for netbooks). So this year, you’ll see processor brand names such as Intel Core i7, Core i5, and Core i3 instead of the soon-to-be exiting Core 2 Duos.

Desktops. The netbook revolution of 2009 has benefited the desktop space. The same power-saving processors and motherboard chips from netbooks are now showing up in a plethora of ultra small nettop PCs.

Audio and Video. The days of the portable media player—or MP3 player, if you will—are more or less in the past. If the past year is any indication, the Next Big Thing is: devices that do everything. Think of them as Apple TV, with apps. Boxes like the Roku HD-XR are likely to get some friendly competition at CES 2010

Innovation and Acquisitions Abound: Apple’s recent purchase of streaming/download service Lala has sparked much speculation. Articles from the New York Times, PC World, and Apple Insider have discussed possible reasons for the purchase, and most tend to focus on the creation of an Apple-powered music streaming platform.

Direct-To-Consumer Continues Ascent: Another important trend this year was the continued emergence of a hyper-charged direct-to-consumer business model. Companies such as Topspin, Audiolife, Nimbit, and Reverb Nation are enabling artists to interact with — and sell to — their audiences in many new ways.

2010 will be the year of analytics

The conversation about an ISP tax for unlimited downloads will continue

Spotify is still gearing up for a U.S. launch, but in light of imeem’s troubles, the ad-supported streaming model is under further scrutiny

Twitter plays with advertising

A recent paper conducted by London-based Essential Research explores the role of digital advertising in marketing luxury brands. Covering the US, UK, France and Japan, the study exposes a global appetite for luxury goods across Asia and Europe.

Flypaper.tv cought up with Beth Uyenco (Global Research Director, Microsoft Advertising) at the Monaco Media Forum last week. She sent over a comprehensive summary of the report for us to share with you. DOWNLOAD IT here

A luxury engagement model developed by Microsoft describes the six fundamental ways in which consumers engage with luxury brands: Awareness, Admiration, Exploration, Consideration, Purchase and Ownership. It is the convergence of these engagements through multiple channels that builds stronger brands and drives consumer brand advocacy. Mapping digital advertising channels to the engagement model allows us to understand the different roles that each can play in a campaign.

Understanding the differences between regions and across countries is instrumental to targeting and planning for luxury consumers. However, across all regions a common set of core purchase motivations is revealed: indulgence, exclusivity, status and quality. These four motivations map to either rational or emotional perceived luxury product benefits. The motivations driving luxury purchases vary among the regions. Mapping countries according to their affinity with different purchase motivations provides insights for campaign planning.

The survey data shows that luxury consumers are heavy users of online services and applications, using the Internet to both engage with and talk about luxury brands. Luxury consumers rate the Internet highly as a source of inspiration and ideas for luxury brands.

Thanks Beth!

MAKING NEWS: INTERNET JOURNALISM, IS IT JOURNALISM?

Panel Notes

DOPFNER: profits up 10% since last yr. if print is dead business, then this kind of death feels pretty comfortable! But i’m not complacent, its very challenging and great opportunity, 20% sales derive from online, I don’t share cultural pessimism, so I see it as an opportunity through digitization.

HUFFINGTON: We PRODUCE NEWS, AGGREGATE AND Curate news. The future is a hybrid future. You cant be a successful newspaper business if there’s not an online component, and online you need to apply traditional journalistic elements and editors. We produce news. 80 full time staff, and multiple part time contributors. Internet not the Wild West, its moderated and controlled,

DOPFNER: hybrid reality, yes. In large part Huffington post takes information from other news sources .The only difference between Huffington and axel is that we are paying for all those images and content… which I think is a better, more sustainable model.
HUFFINGTON: nobody is saying that traditional publishers are going out of business. You can spin traditional journalism more than you can the thousands and millions of bloggers and twitter fees. Journalism is improving, it’s getting better. Because of what’s available now.
MODERATOR: WHOS PAYING FOR THIS?? Is it traditional news providers?
HUFFINGTON: our model is entirely ad supported. The bottom line is that our advertising is working, despite economic crisis, and getting better. Greg Colman is now president and chief revenue officer and it’s working. In my opinion, unless you are offering porn or very specialized financial information you wont succeed by putting content behind walls. You might be able to sustain it for a little while, but it’s a model that’s in the past.

DOPFNER- sex, sports, games, money, power — These are all topics that have always dominated global interest. Sex and crime, love and death. Thousands of years they have been willing to pay for these things. Why is digital making it pay less? Would you go to supermarket and get a free beer? Sure, but its not possible. What is the business model for the future? If web is future for entertainment and information, then how can this world have quality content if there is no business model behind it? With all admiration of Huffington post, you have launched in 2005 — I can imagine its break even. If our magazine had free bloggers our revenues would sky rise but…you talk to the unions, etc etc. FOR QUALITY CONTENT PEOPLE WILL, AND NEED TO PAY FOR IT.

HUFFINGTON: you are incredibly convincing but will be proved incredibly wrong. That ship has sailed. Consumers are now used to search and go on web in multiple ways; the idea that you will provide content in an exclusive way better than others is not realistic. The LINKED ECONOMY IS THE FUTURE. Embeddable players.. UBIQIUITY IS THE NEW EXCLUSIVITY. Promiscuity is not good for relationships but its very good online.

Moderator: bloggers contribute opinions, they contribute fewer FACTS. Consumers are going more to opinions than facts… Internet accelerates this at fantastic and horrifying rate.

DOPFNER: web not making things worse. I’m an optimist. Its not about opinion or facts. It’s a neutral platform that globally distributes content and pushes all content to everyone. Even stupidity is globally distributed, as are good things like scientific content, etc. I’m simply for reliable, legal and business framework.

HUFFINGTON: add vs. ocd – print media tends to be ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) , you break big stories on front page and abandoned them. Online, you are OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), we stay with the story until something happens. Eg. Afghanistan, the kind of coverage that understands its neither left nor right, its opinion based on fact. Investigative fund is expanding and we are working on the factual collection.

DOPFNER: your business model won’t sustain sending your staff to do investigative research. Right now its free opinions based on facts that traditional news sourced FIND AND SOURCE FOR YOU. WE PAY FOR THAT. You get it free…. For now. But what happens when that free source is depleted?

DOPFNER: you don’t just wake up one morning and decide to start charging. It’s a gradual process. Step by step approach
HUFFINFGTON: there is not an exclusive way to present news. YOUR BEER METAPHOR is wrong. If you start with wrong metaphor you will make the wrong decisions. You will soon recognize the future is free.

Arianna Huffington has the last word….
